Port Adelaide has selected midfielder-forward Christian Moraes with pick 38 on the second night of the Telstra AFL National Draft.
Moraes is a running machine known for his ability to cover the ground and both find the footy and impact games offensively and defensively.
He accumulates possessions when running through the middle of the ground, can push forward to hit the scoreboard and isn’t afraid to drag his opponent deep into defence and assist his backline in outnumbering opponents.
The Knox product enjoyed a prolific season in the Coates Talent League averaging 23.8 disposals and booting 18 goals on his way to Team of the Year honours. He also finished joint runner-up in Eastern Ranges best and fairest count.
He was also a key contributor to Victoria Metro’s AFL National Championship winning side.
Port Adelaide National Recruiting Manager Geoff Parker says:
Christian has very good stoppage craft and can take the ball cleanly or get on the move to receive. He runs clever patterns when forward and can lose opponents in traffic to find space.
AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin Sheehan says:
A running machine who is prepared to work deep into defence as well as push forward to create options for his team. Also has clean hands and is composed with the ball. Had an impressive season for the Eastern Ranges in the Coates Talent League, averaging 23.8 disposals and kicking 18 goals in 12 matches to finish joint runner up in their best and fairest award and earn Coates Talent League Team of the Year selection. Continued his high-level output by averaging 21 disposals for Victoria Metro in a star-studded midfield group, with his best performance coming against South Australia where he amassed 22 disposals and kicked two goals. His time of 6:25 on the 2km time trial at the Draft Combine ranked equal-ninth.
