First round draftee Chad Wingard is the fan favourite to take out Port Adelaide’s best first-year player award for 2012.

The club asked fans of its official Facebook page who they believe would win the Power’s best first year player award if the medal count was held today.

Wingard was the favourite with 219 votes clearly leading the count ahead of Jarrad Redden and Aaron Young.

Having debuted in Round 1 against St Kilda, Wingard has established himself as a mainstay of Port Adelaide’s first 22 and has fought through an early year shoulder injury to cement his place as one of the AFL’s exciting young prospects.

He led home Jarrad Redden, a debutant ruckman in his first year at the club who polled 56 votes and emerging midfielder Aaron Young who came third.

The results will by no means guarantee Wingard the award though, with the chance of new blood coming into the team to cover injuries to Port’s first choice forwards, backs and midfielders.

Port Adelaide will ask ‘the question’ of its Facebook fans over the next week as to who they believe will win the Power’s other end of year awards, including the John Cahill Medal for its best and fairest player.
