PORT ADELAIDE Senior Assistant Coach Michael Voss has described as “a big tick” the Power’s intra-club hit-out on Friday night, after seeing some positive signs from the team and having no injuries reported.

The game finished in a come-from-behind 29-point win for Team Black, featuring a four-goal haul from Charlie Dixon.

First-year forward Dylan Williams booted three for Team White.

Voss was impressed with the effort on show and pleased with the reported clean bill of health.

“It was largely uneventful, which is exactly how you want your internal trials to be,” he said after the game.

“Being able to look at your game style and see how the guys are executing that – some of the blustery conditions made it a little bit hard to move the ball around but it was good to be able to see the guys have a full hit-out.

“We got some good run into a few players that have been a little bit short in recent weeks like Hamish Hartlett came back into full load today, managed a bit towards the end and Todd Marshall, who has been a little bit compromised – but other than that, we got some really good match practice into the guys.”

Wingman Xavier Duursma needed stitches to his left cheek after a clash of heads in the last quarter but other than that, Voss said it was a solid hit-out that would make selection difficult for next week’s first round of the Marsh Community Series against Brisbane.

“I think you just want to see the players come away unscathed, that’s the biggest thing,” Voss explained.

“You walk away, you clearly want to see some game style in there, which was a bit tricky today given the conditions were a bit blustery, but you walk away with enough clarity with what we need to work on and walk away with 100 minutes under their belt and no injuries so I think that’s a big tick.”

Voss gave another big tick to Jack Watts, who made his return to the field nearly a year after he suffered a badly broken leg in Round 2 last season.

The big man looked composed across the backline, giving Voss plenty to be optimistic about.

“It was really promising today, I thought he played really well,” the former Brisbane triple Premiership player said.

“It just goes to show when the footies are out and the real thing comes.

“He was a little bit compromised through pre-season. He’s been building fairly steadily and today I thought he was really good.”

Voss singled out Williams and fellow first-year forward Mitch Georgiades for praise after their first competitive hit-out for the club, while he said fellow draftee Miles Bergman also had good moments.

The Power will tackle Brisbane at the Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex on Sunday 23 February in its first Marsh Community Series game, while supporters will also get a chance to see the side play pre-season games against the Western Bulldogs in Whyalla in Marsh 2 on Saturday 7 March and an Under 23 Showdown against Adelaide on Saturday 29 February.
