Forward Faces A Month Out
Jay Schulz could miss a month of football after suffering internal bleeding after Port's game against the Dogs
PORT Adelaide forward Jay Schulz could be out for up to a month, after he was rushed to hospital on Sunday night with internal bleeding.
Schulz copped an errant knee to the stomach from teammate Justin Westhoff during the second quarter of Sunday's match against the Western Bulldogs and was admitted to intensive care after the game.
Power doctor Mark Fisher said Schulz began suffering severe abdominal pain after the match and was taken to hospital where scans revealed internal bleeding.
He said scans on Monday showed the bleeding had stopped, but that Schulz would miss a chunk of football due to the severity of the injury.
"Fortunately, that bleeding's settled down overnight, he's had another scan this morning and it shows that the bleeding's stopped - he's quite stable, he's well," Fisher said.
"Due to concerns regarding that bleeding he'll stay in hospital for at least the next couple of days.
"I expect he'll probably be unable to play for the next at lest three to four weeks."
The Power insisted the injury was not related to the bruising Schulz suffered to his ribs during the round 10 clash with Carlton.
He wore a guard over that injury during Sunday's match.
Power teammate Brad Ebert said Schulz played a non-compromising brand of football and continually put his body on the line.
Schulz has endured a horror run of injuries of late, including an incident in round five's Showdown with Adelaide where he feared he had lost his eye.
But Ebert said he wouldn't want the 27-year-old to play any other way.
"It's shocking to see and shocking to hear and obviously he played the game out and played it out well," he said.
"It's obviously courageous and all the boys just get up because they know how hard goes about it and he does everything for the team."
Sunday's match took a huge toll on the Power, with Schulz joined by Jacob Surjan and Hamish Hartlett on the injury list.
Surjan was concussed in the game and Hartlett injured his hamstring.
Hartlett's injury is particularly worrying for the Power given his string of similar injuries, but Ebert said it wouldn't be known how severe it was until he received scans on it.
Power coach Matthew Primus did estimate, after Sunday's game, that Hartlett could face a month on the sidelines.
Port has the bye this weekend and coming off two consecutive losses and with serious injury concerns, Ebert said it had come at the right time.
"With a few injuries coming up like this and the last couple of games we did really tire by the end ... it's a good weekend to have off," he said.
"[It will be good to] refresh and hopefully get back for the last 10 [games]."
