THE Port Adelaide Football Club and captain Travis Boak are supporting the Childhood Cancer Association’s Annual Appeal in 2014.

Boak is the Association’s ambassador and has supported its work since 2010.

Having lost his own father to cancer, Boak understands the strain cancer treatment and rehabilitation can put on the sufferer, their family and friends.

For a child undergoing cancer treatment, the need for strong support is paramount.

That’s where the Childhood Cancer Association (CCA) comes in for families in South australia..

The CCA’s Annual Appeal is an important fundraiser for the association to ensure it continues to provide ongoing support to patients and families through the difficult process of cancer treatment.

Currently, the CCA provides free, ongoing and tailored hands on support to more than 250 families at its North Adelaide base.

For Boak, the opportunity to give something back to children in the community fighting one of the biggest battles of their young lives is something he takes great pride in.

“I joined the Childhood Cancer Association as an Ambassador in 2010, and every year I am amazed at what the team does for kids with cancer and their families, it is so inspiring,” Boak says.

“I wanted to join CCA because when I was 16, I lost my dad to cancer and it was the hardest time in not only my life, but also for my family.

“I am fortunate enough now to be in a position to help the kids and their families going through this battle - by saying hello and trying to put a smile on their face in hospital, or simply just talking footy - because I know how hard it is to go through this.

“Some of my great memories are kicking the footy with kids, and throwing the little footballs with the kids in their hospital bed and seeing them with a smile on their face."

Boak says the CCA’s annual appeal is one of the most important times of year for the association as it seeks to continue its high level of support for children undergoing treatment and their families.

“The CCA team do an amazing job at helping these kids and their families, and I am so proud to be involved with such a great group,” Boak said.

“I encourage everyone to please help support this great Association so they can continue to help these strong kids and their families.”
