WillPOWER expands to the APY Lands
Staff from Power Community Ltd and the Port Adelaide Football Club have travelled to the APY Lands to launch the WillPOWER program with Senator Nigel Scullion, Minister for Indigenous Affairs
Senator Scullion visited the Fregon community as part of the Remote School Attendance Strategy, a partnership approach with families, communities and schools to improve school attendance and learning outcomes.
Funding of $300,000 from the Australian Government will be used to deliver the WillPOWER program in primary schools across the APY Lands. The WillPOWER program was initially created for students in years 6-9 who were too young to participate in the Aboriginal Power Cup. The program has since been modified for primary schools in Ceduna and the Maralinga Lands, the Barkly Region in Central Australia, and now the APY Lands. WillPOWER encourages children to make the right choices every day with a specific focus on health and education.
The Adelaide Crows also participated in the launch and will receive similar funding for a program in secondary schools.
Senator Scullion reinforced that getting children to attend school every day was the top priority for Indigenous communities, and he was pleased that both South Australian clubs were prepared to work in partnership to address this serious issue. The Port Adelaide Football Club and Power Community Ltd thank the Australian Government for embracing the WillPOWER program - we are kicking goals together.
