Port Adelaide secures free agent White
Port Adelaide has made one of the first player exchanges of the 2013 free agency period with Richmond's most improved player from the year set to play with the Power for three years.
The 26-year-old has signed a three-year contract, which will see him committed to the club until the end of the 2016 season.
White was drafted by Richmond with pick five in the 2006 NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft, playing 105 games between the 2007 and 2013 seasons.
He was named the Tigers’ Most Improved Player earlier this week.
White played 16 games this year including twelve of the last thirteen games of the home-and-away season. He missed two matches after Round 7 – both through injury – and had established himself in Richmond’s starting 22 by year’s end.
Electing to join Port Adelaide’s dynamic young list despite offers from several other clubs, White says he is looking forward to the chance to challenge for a spot in the Power’s line up from the outset of the 2014 season.
“It’s a massive opportunity to come to a great club in Port Adelaide and I’m really looking forward to what the next few years can bring the club and me personally,” said White.
“It’s a massive thing for me to come over to SA and into a group that’s played in two finals this year.
“I know Ken runs a pretty tight ship and I’m really excited about the challenge of trying to slot into the 22 each week and hopefully be playing finals come the end of next year.
“Ken and Alan Richardson have outlined some key roles for me to play throughout the year, but I’m just looking forward to getting out there and playing on some quality opponents, as well as hopefully winning a lot of games!”
Port Adelaide senior coach Ken Hinkley says White is a valuable addition to the Power’s list as well as a club-oriented player who will quickly fit in at Alberton.
“Matt has got great character and is a fantastic person – he’s exactly the type of player we want to be getting to our football club,” said Hinkley.
“Attracting the right type of people to our club is so important.
“But he also satisfies our list needs and we believe he can play a couple of roles for us over the next three years.
“Getting some outside run to the club was a priority going into this trade period and it is a tremendous result that we’ve been able to secure a player of Matt’s quality so early in this period.”
