The AFL has released its first Official AFL Player Ratings list.

A comprehensive formula has been applied to official AFL statistics to create a list of the competition’s best players.

The statistics go beyond the regular measures of kicks, marks and handballs by taking into account those hard-to-measure variables of our game, like chasing, corralling, perceived and actual physical pressure, disposal efficiency and where the possessions were collected.

The formula is applied to the statistics of the previous 40 AFL rounds, meaning that a player’s ranking is determined by their match performances over an extended period of time.

Not surprisingly, Gary Ablett of the Gold Coast Suns heads the list, clearly ahead of Josh Kennedy of the Swans, Joel Selwood of Geelong and Collingwood midfielder Scott Pendlebury.

The formula goes some way to explaining the relatively low ranking of Port Adelaide players, a result of our disappointing and somewhat injury riddled 2011 and 2012 seasons.

Never the less, it’s a little surprising to find our reigning John Cahill medallist, Kane Cornes, down at number 200.

Captain Travis Boak is our first listed player, at number 70, followed closely by Hamish Hartlett at number 73, with Brad Ebert a little further behind at number 91.
