THE RACE for Port Adelaide’s leading goal kicker award has heated up with just three matches remaining.

Angus Monfries’s seven-goal haul against Geelong has thrown him right into contention to top the Power’s goal kicker standings at the end of the season.

Monfries is currently placed third and sits one goal adrift of leaders Jay Schulz and Chad Wingard who each have 36 majors so far this season.

Schulz and Wingard booted four and three goals respectively in Port’s previous encounter with this Saturday’s opponent Gold Coast.

Monfries was held goalless in that match, although his recent form suggests he will be prolific up forward for the remainder of this season.

The past five weeks have yielded 13 straight majors for Monfries.

His seven goals against Geelong was a career-best return and the ex-Essendon forward continues to pay dividends for the Power in attack.

It comes after his significant contribution to Port’s Showdown win in Round 19 and his performance against the Bombers where he kicked four goals in Round 15.

Jay Schulz has led the goal scorers at Alberton for most of the year.

It is perhaps no surprise given his significant tallies in the last three seasons, including 42 in an injury-plagued 2012.

The next three weeks will give Schulz the chance to reach a personal milestone, with the key forward only six goals in arrears of his career-best tally.

At just 20 years of age Wingard has wasted no time adjusting to the rigours and demands of professional football.

His best performance on the scoreboard was in the most recent Showdown – a five-goal effort that led to calls for his inclusion in the All-Australian team.

That haul, which included the match winner, placed him right into the middle of the club’s goal-kicking race.

The trio deserve their places at the top of the Power’s goal-kicking ladder; none have kicked more than 20 behinds for the season.

Kicking efficiency is a crucial asset for the modern forward.

Schulz will aim to become the first consecutive winner of the award since Warren Tredrea.

Wingard is attempting to become the youngest winner since Robbie Gray won it at the age of 23, while Monfries would be looking to add another honour to the leading goalkicker award he won at Essendon back in 2010.

It will provide an entertaining subplot to the conclusion of the home-and-away season.
