Our players get back up: Hinkley
Hinkley most pleased with willpower of his team ahead of Swans clash.
Forget, even, the 70-point win.
The ability for Port Adelaide's players to withstand what St Kilda threw at them is what Ken Hinkley took away from Saturday's twilight game at the Adelaide Oval.
When Sam Gray and Jarman Impey - among the smaller players on Port Adelaide's list - were brutally hit during proceedings at the club's city ground, Hinkley was thrilled they got back up.
The same could be said for Aaron Young's ability to absorb a hard tackle midway through the game, come off with a sore shoulder, and still impact when he came on minutes later.
"I love the ability to get up and go again," Hinkley said.
"I'm pretty hard on the players as far as when they get hit - it's not fair to be honest, because they're getting put under a fair bit of physical punishment out there.
"[But] I just want them to get up.
"I think it's a great sign when your players get off the ground as quick as they can.
"Don't stay down, just get up."
Of course, Hinkley was also pleased with his group's ability to overcome a deadlock at the closing stages of the second quarter and kick out to a 10-goal victory.
But that was a credit as much to the Power's team defence, not just its finishing ability up forward.
"We don't hide away from the fact that we haven't played our best defensive football for the last couple of weeks... and we needed to make sure we got that right tonight," said Hinkley.
"At half time we'd held them to 29 points, obviously if you can do that for two halves it's going to be really hard to kick a good score, and in good conditions, so it was pleasing."
It's a good sign ahead of what promises to be a brutal game against premiership favourites Sydney at the SCG next week.
Hinkley will see the Swans play the Gold Coast Suns at Metricon Stadium on Sunday before flying back to Adelaide to prepare for the significant challenge that the 2012 premiers promise on unfamiliar territory.
The Power hasn't played the Swans at the SCG since Hinkley took the helm of the club last year.
It's last game there was a 62-point loss in 2011, just nine of Saturday night's team played in that game.
The hunger for the challenge of the best teams in the land already has Hinkley anticipating a significant contest, however.
"I'm looking forward to it," Hinkley said.
"It's going to be a real challenge for us, but not one that we're shying away from.
"Defensively, if we stand up OK, we'll be all right ... I think we've got an appetite that's similar I think to the way the game's played.
"It's a challenge for our players to go into foreign territory against a great side and take them on."
Port Adelaide plays Sydney at the SCG at 2:10pm (AEST) on Saturday 14 June.
