An inaugural member of the Port Adelaide squad that entered the AFL after he won the 1996 Magarey Medal in the SANFL, Francou debuted for the Power in round 1, 1997,against Collingwood at the MCG. He was a key part of the Power midfield, finished third in the Brownlow in 2001, then going one position higher in 2002. In both of those years he represented Australia in the International Rules series, and played in the pre-season Premiership side. In 2002 he was also named as an All Australia. Sadly, due to severe knee injuries in 2003 and 2004, Francou missed out on playing in the 2004 Premiership winning side.
