Greg Bentley (Sturt)

Kicks 10 / Marks 7 / Handballs 13 / Goals 1 / Tackles 3

Since Round 3 this year, Greg Bentley had been a regular inclusion in the Power line-up. He was omitted for the match against Carlton, so he went back to the SANFL and put in a performance that should see him return to AFL action sooner rather than later. Bentley’s performance was so good that Port Adelaide development coach Darren Trevena has named him the Cibo Glenelg Power SANFL Player of the Week.

Bentley returned some good stats but Trevena was impressed by more than just the numbers.

“His run and strength were excellent,” Trevena told PortAdelaideFC.com.au.

“He went back to Sturt and fitted in well and he was a real part of the group. The Double Blues acknowledge he’s a fantastic guy to have around the club as he leads very well.

“He played half-back on the Gowans and on-ball. He shut them down and ran them into the ground; he also got plenty of the ball himself. A lot of people can shut down the Gowans but they can’t find the ball for themselves.

“He kicked the ball well and used the ball well. His endurance and ability to work both ways was excellent.”

It was a long weekend full of football for Darren Trevena. Here’s how he saw the performances of all the other Power players in the SANFL…

Fabian Deluca (Sturt)

K 1 / M 0 / HB 0 / G 0 / T 0 / HO 21

“He played a bit up forward and in the ruck. He rucked very well and he’s working on his possessions around the ground.”

Adam Thomson (Sturt)

K 7 / M 7 / H 17 / G 0 / T 3

“Adam had another good game across half-forward and on-ball. Once again, his hands in close were excellent. He brings other people into the game well and that’s two good games in a row.”

Jonathan Giles (Central)

K 6 / M 3 / HB 2 / G 0 / T 0 / HO 6

“Giles played forward, in the ruck and on the bench. He struggled a bit against Fabian Deluca, he tried a couple of different things but couldn’t get on top of him.”

Nick Lower (Norwood)

K 11 / M 9 / HB 11 / G 0 / T 1

“Nick played close to the best game of the year for him. He ran off and used the ball well. He shut his players down and is getting back to the form that’s a chance to see him play AFL footy.”

Matt Thomas (Norwood)

K 8 / M 3 / HB 8 / G 1 / T 0

“Matty had quite a good game. He worked hard and played tough. He hurt his knee in the last quarter (and will miss around six weeks).”

Adam Cockshell (Norwood)

K 7 / M 4 / HB 4 / G 1 / T 1

“Cockshell played a bit higher than normal and presented well. He did his role for the team and looked vibrant. He’s getting back to his best and improving every week.”

Nathan Batsanis (Eagles)

K 10 / M 4 / HB 3 / G 3 / T 2

“Nathan played half-forward and on-ball and is developing himself as an on-baller for the Eagles. His running ability and kicking is excellent and he’s looking to add another string to his bow as an on-baller.”

Paul Stewart (Eagles)

K 7 / M 5 / HB 3 / G 0 / T 0

“Paul had an average game by his standards. He played all over the ground on the weekend. He started OK and then tried to go everywhere. He probably needs to get a little bit more desperate at times and needs to adjust his game to suit the conditions and the style of the game.”

Alipate Carlile (South Adelaide)

K 9 / M 2 / HB 5 / G 1 / T 1

“Alipate was close to being the SANFL Player of the Week again. He played on Cupido, who managed one goal against Alipate, while Alipate had a couple of shots on goal himself. He also created plenty of run.”

Travis Boak (Glenelg)

K 12 / M 6 / HB 16 / G 0 / T 1

“Boak was very good again and is pushing for AFL selection. He ran off well and used the ball reasonably well. He covered the ground very well and found lots of the ball.”

Josh Mahoney (Glenelg)

K 9 / M 0 / HB 2 / G 0 / T 0

“Mahns worked very hard out on the ground. Unfortunately he is working hard for little reward right now. He just needs to adjust his game to pick up more possessions but his work rate is fantastic. His effort to run and pressure is excellent.”

Nathan Lonie (North Adelaide)

K 8 / M 1 / HB 4 / G 0 / T 0

“Nathan hadn’t trained with any of the (North Adelaide) players and he travelled to Melbourne as the travelling emergency. He got in there and had a reasonable second quarter where he started to get into the game.”

Peter Hardy (Sturt reserves)

“Pete was in Sturt’s best players off a half-back flank and on-ball. He got a lot of the ball and was clean and used the ball well.”

Alex Lee (Sturt reserves)

“Alex is still working hard to try to find the good early season form that he showed.”

Ryan Williams (Central reserves)

“Ryan played off half-forward and covered the ground very well and picked up a fair few touches and was among Central’s best.”

Hugh Minson (Norwood reserves)

“Hugh played forward and in the ruck. He kicked four goals and was best-on-ground. He was disappointed not to get a call up for this match, so he was out to make amends and he did that which was pleasing”

Gavin Grose (North Adelaide reserves)

“Gavin was excellent. He played centre half-back and was very good. His opponent only scored one point against him in the first half. Gavin then played centre half-forward in the second half and ended up kicking two goal 2.2, he also presented well. He was close to best-on-ground.”
