Adam Thomson (Sturt)

Kicks 14 / Marks 3 / Handballs 14 / Goals 4 / Tackles 3

Adam Thomson has been putting in solid SANFL performances in the past couple of weeks and lifted his game another notch this weekend. Power Development Coach, Darren Trevena, has named Thomson as the Cibo Glenelg SANFL Power Player of the Week.

It was all facets of Thomson’s game that caught the eye of Trevena.

“Adam had a fantastic game. His hands in close were excellent and he finished off well with 4.1 and that could have been six straight. All his goals were different as well. He scored by crumbing, leading, marking and receiving handballs,” Trevena told PortAdelaideFC.com.au.

“I think he has been consistent in what he’s been doing and he has been working on getting more time in the midfield. Adam has been working on his kicking which was excellent on the weekend. This week he had more than 30 touches with four goals which are up from the 20 or so he has had in previous weeks.”

As well as Thomson’s skill level Trevena was also impressed with his work rate.

“Adam has been prepared to run and work and he was pretty good in a losing side. He wants to be part of the next level and hopefully that will come soon, but with our (Power) midfield doing so well it’s hard to break in,” Trevena said.

“He’s a guy who thinks about his footy and always is looking to improve and he’s moving towards that.”

Adam Thomson is just one player who is keeping pressure on for spots in the Port Adelaide line up. Darren Trevena grabbed his Balfours pie and Farmers Union iced coffee to watch the rest of the Power players in the SANFL across the weekend. Here’s how he saw them…

Brad Symes (Central)

K 19 / M 8 / HB 14 / G 0 / T 2

“Symes is pretty amazing at times. He’s up and down like a yo-yo but he goes back with a fantastic attitude. To get 33 possessions and display the work rate he did was just fantastic. I think he had 25 touches in the second half. It was a great effort”

Jonathan Giles (Central)

K 2 / M 1 / HB 4 / G 1 / T 0 / HO 10

“He is probably a bit stagnant right now. He rucked against a guy that bashes and crashes in and he probably broke even. He probably didn’t have the same impact around the ground as he did in previous weeks.”

Adam Cockshell (Norwood)

K 4 / M 4 / HB 2 / G 0 / T 0

“Adam was probably a little bit disappointing. He didn’t get a lot of game time and finished with an injury but he did take a couple of nice marks and did a good spoil. He was a little bit inaccurate in-front of goal with two points. We’re just trying to get him going again.”

Nick Lower (Norwood)

K 9 / M 5 / HB 9 / G 0 / T 3

“Nick was very good. He had four different opponents and shut most of them down. With the amount of ball that was coming down there, (the Norwood back-line) he was under siege a fair amount of the time and I thought he handled it quite well. He was brave and steady.”

Ryan Willits (West Adelaide)

K 10 / M 9 / HB 7 / G 0 / T 1

“Ryan had a reasonable game. He presented well and got a fair bit of the ball outside of the 50, creating more room for Cupido. Ryan needs to reward himself a bit more by working harder into that space and getting a few goals for himself. He’s slowly getting back to his best.”

Gavin Grose (North Adelaide)

K 5 / M 6 / HB 6 / G 0 / T 0

“Gavin had an interesting game. He had three goals against him in the first quarter and then moved up the ground where he could run a bit more and he was pretty good. It was good for Gav to bounce back from three goals in the first quarter.”

Damon White (North Adelaide)

K 4 / M 2 / HB 2 / G 2 / T 0

“Damon started the game like he was a class above the rest of the players. He had touches early and he kicked two goals, including a nice snap around the body. It looked like he was going to have one of those days and bag eight but unfortunately he got a knock to the knee. He tried to play on but the pain was too severe.”

Josh Mahoney (Glenelg)

K 8 / M 2 / HB 6 / G 1 / T 1

“Josh showed some real bounce and spring that we hadn’t seen for a couple of weeks with his injured ankle. I think that was a good sign that he looked fresh and he looked good. He works real hard and he does the chasing and makes tackles. He’ll get better and better and you’d think, it’ll only be a couple of weeks before he is pushing for AFL selection.”

Troy Chaplin (Sturt)

K 11 / M 3 / HB 11 / G 0 / T 0

Troy played his first game back after six weeks off injured and he was a little bit rusty early. He reads the play very well and he had four different opponents and he adjusted his game to suit, he’s quite a smart player and he’ll have a huge impact on that side.””

Fabian Deluca (Sturt)

K 0 / M 0 / HB 0 / G 0 / T 1 / HO 18

“Fabian has just dropped off a bit from the bench mark that he had set. He had been in some good form there for a while, when he had put five or six good games on end. He just needs to get his hunger and aggression back for the second half of the year.”

Ryan Williams (Central reserves)

“Another good game by Ryan, that’s probably three on end in the reserves. He is playing through the middle and was rewarded by three goals. He’s probably starting to feel like he’s part of the group.”

Hugh Minson (Norwood reserves)

“He was pretty good at centre bounces and around the boundary. He played in the ruck and moved well and showed some aggression. He’s really itching to get another game at league level and I think he’ll get one in the not too distant future if he keeps putting his name up there.”

Peter Hardy (Sturt reserves)

“Another good game by Peter. That’s his third or fourth in a row now, so he’s been hitting some good form with lots of possessions. His use of the ball and speed are the features of his game.”

Alex Lee (Sturt reserves)

“Alex hurt his shoulder in the first quarter and stayed on and played in the forward line but he was hampered by his shoulder.”
