A big night at the selection table for Garry Hocking ahead of his first game as caretaker coach.

PortAdelaideFC.com.au takes a look at who’s in the mix for both Port Adelaide and Hawthorn ahead of the Round 20 clash.

Port Adelaide

Nathan Blee, David Rodan and Darren Pfeiffer all impressed in the SANFL on the weekend and will be strong chances to be selected to face the Hawks.

Blee was dominant for North Adelaide playing in a slightly new role on the wing where he racked up 26 disposals, 9 marks, 7 inside 50s and a goal.

The mature-age recruit at 21 years of age, Blee has been in consistent form for most of the year at SANFL level and is just waiting for his opportunity on the big stage.

Blee’s selection chances may hinge on the fitness of Alipate Carlile (back) and Troy Chaplin (knee).

The pair are likely to be tested at training on Thursday and if either is unable to play, Blee’s chances may rise.

Rodan and Pfeiffer were among the best for Norwood in their huge win over Sturt and their mature bodies may be called upon against a seasoned Hawthorn outfit.

It was Rodan’s first game back from an extended spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury and the coaches will need to be confident he can run out a full AFL game if they are to select him.

Port Adelaide had the bye in the local league meaning Ben Jacobs, Jacob Surjan and Steven Salopek all didn’t play, potentially hindering their selection chances.

Jarrad Redden’s Eagles also had the bye but the young ruckman may be recalled to support Matt Lobbe in the ruck against the likes of David Hale and Jarryd Roughead.

Jasper Pittard is still a week away from resuming while John Butcher (hips), Brent Renouf (knee), Ben Newton (knee) and Daniel Webb (pectoral) all had their seasons cut short due to surgery this week.

The Power will have a close training at Alberton on Thursday before flying to Launceston on Saturday.

Hawthorn

Lance Franklin is the name on everyone’s lips at Hawthorn - will he or won’t he play?

The signs seem good for Franklin who was able to train strongly on Saturday and again earlier this week, giving hope ‘Buddy’ will return from a hamstring injury.

“We hope so,” Hawthorn football manager Mark Evans said of a possible Franklin return.

“Let’s see how he goes by the end of the week, but hopefully big Buddy will be back out there.”

Ruckman Max Bailey was a late withdrawal due to illness last week against the Hawks but he’s been declared fit to play in Round 20. Whether the Hawks match committee decide that’s at Box Hill or Hawthorn remains to be seen.

Midfielder Liam Shiels will miss the Round 20 clash through suspension, opening the door for a host of players.

Veteran Chance Bateman was in the best at Box Hill while Xavier Ellis kicked two goals in his second game back from a knee injury. Youngster Bradley Hill could also provide an injection of pace to a dangerous Hawthorn midfield.

Former Power-listed defender Stephen Gilham and running defender Tom Murphy also impressed in Box Hill’s win over Coburg in the VFL and will be discussed at the selection table following the Hawks’ agonising loss to Geelong in Round 19.
