PORT Adelaide's players say it was self-belief that allowed them to pull off one of the greatest final quarter comebacks in the club's AFL history.

The Power booted five unanswered goals from the 10 minute mark of the fourth, thanks to the stellar performances of Jay Schulz (seven goals) and Danyle Pearce (30 disposals), creating an emotion charged victory.

Port Adelaide midfielder Brad Ebert said his team’s ability to play with self-belief and attack the football hard was the reason they were able to grind out the win.

“At the start of the game we really tried to back ourselves and take the game on and play with confidence - up until three-quarter time we probably weren’t doing that enough,” Ebert said.

“Matty told us that we have to go for it and make sure we take the game on and to be able to do that and come away with a win is a real credit to the boys - it was just a great fight back.”

It was however, Port Adelaide’s substitute, Paul Stewart who became the hero of the day.

He took the game by the scruff of the neck when it was there to be won, breaking free from a tackle, showing poise in a pressure-filled passage of play to convert the winning goal.

Despite leading his team to victory, Stewart commended his teammates fighting spirit and said the ‘other 21’ deserved more recognition than he did.

“It’s good to kick that winning goal at the end of the day, but I came on as a sub and just wanted to do my part - it was just a great team effort,” Stewart said.

Jay Schulz was the standout performance, bagging seven goals and always believed Port Adelaide was in with a chance.

“I remember saying to the boys a couple of times during the game ‘we are still in this’- but the last quarter was a bit of a blur,” said Schulz.

Schulz said he was proud of Stewart’s composure in the dying seconds of the game and was sure the kick was going to be a major score.

“I knew it was going to go through as soon as he kicked it - I backed him (Stewart) all the way.”

New recruit Darren Pfeiffer praised his team’s high work rate and said the players really responded to Primus’s three-quarter-time message with a desire to show their support for the coach.

“A lot of the guys kept working hard -that’s what we have to do and Matty said that at three-quarter time and that’s what happened,” Pfeiffer said.

“Matty’s been great - we have had belief in him and in each other and that’s what happened so hopefully we can take a step forward from here on in.

Port Adelaide will now shift its focus to next week’s clash against Gold Coast.

“We are looking towards next week - we are going to soak up the win but we need to really focus on getting another win next week,” said Pfeiffer.
