The duffle coat has returned to Port Adelaide.

For so long it was the only acceptable form of clothing for the footy.

The best ones were covered in sewn-on patches – one for every season – and at least half the team’s player badges.

They were status symbols, badges of honour, and more often than not, were accompanied by a magnificent, flowing mullet.

Power assistant coach Adam Kingsley, who has sported a mullet and worn moccasins at times through his football career, remembers them well.

“They were definitely the holy grail among football supporters when I was growing up,” he said.

“The more you had stitched onto them the better. People used to pick their favourite player and then get his name stitched onto the sleeve.”

So it was no surprise that Adam was very pleased to hear that the Power Gear Shop now has Power duffle coats, the 2007 version.

The 2007 version is remarkably similar to the old ones – heavy, woolen and long, with those rectangular shaped bits instead of buttons. It has a classic-shaped hood with some writing on one side of the hood that no-one will see unless you have the hood on.

There are some pre-added Power patches on one arm. They’re an oldish-looking style but they’re quite obviously new. More patches, and plenty of player badges need to be added if you’re thinking of re-inventing the one you wore in the 80s.

“I think they’ll be sold out by the weekend,” Kingsley said!

The Power duffle coat is now in the Power Gear Shop and available online. It sells for $140.
