Tough-nut Paul Stewart picked up the SANFL Player of the Week award for Round 5 after a standout performance for the Eagles against West on Saturday.

Stewart, who played four games for the Power earlier in the year, starred on the wing picking up 35 disposals and kicking two goals.

The award is judged by the Power development coaches and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.

The club’s development manager Daniel Healy and development coach Darren Trevena take us through all the action from a busy round of SANFL for Power players:

Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week Paul Stewart (for Eagles v West at Richmond)Paul played on a wing and had 26 kicks, 10 marks, 9 handballs, 16 handball receives, 5 bounces, 6 inside 50s and 2.1. It was a very complete performance from Stewie and it was great that he went back to the SANFL and stepped up after having a week off being 23rd man for the Power. We want to develop him into a winger and this performance showed he’s got the capabilities to do so. We were very impressed.

Nick Salter (for Eagles v West at Richmond) Rolled his ankle very early on. He had it strapped and went back on but wasn’t moving very well. Didn’t have a big impact on the game but he did kick a goal.

Ryan Willits (for West v Eagles at Richmond) Ryan’s best game for the year easily. Started at centre half-forward then moved to full-back on Passador late in the game. He presented well and had a real presence up forward kicking 2.1 and then went back and did a good job on Passador. He picked up 26 touches and had 7 marks.

Robbie Gray (for West v Eagles at Richmond) Robbie played in the forward pocket and on the ball. He didn’t get a lot of the ball, but what he did and when he was around the footy he was dangerous as ever.

Nick Lower (for Norwood v South at Norwood) Played a bit on the ball and a bit on the wing and had a very good first half. Got plenty of possessions, 21 to be exact, and had a couple of shots on goal. It was a solid game for Nick. He ran out of legs in the end, but his work-rate was good and was tough through the middle. He’s pushing towards selection, he just needs to string a couple of high standard games together in a row.

Adam Cockshell (for Norwood v South at Norwood) Played in the ruck against probably the second best ruckman in the SANFL in Parry, and played ok. He jumped in hard and worked hard around the ground. We’d like to see him play more up forward in the future, but Norwood need him in the ruck to fill a void.

Fabian Deluca (for Sturt v Glenelg at Unley) He was jumping in well at the centre bounce and gave them the ascendancy in there by getting his hand to it first. He hunted the ball well and pushed back into defence to fill the hole and make Glenelg kick over his head. 25 hitouts, 7 possessions and 3 marks, which was a good game.

Mitch Farmer (for Sturt v Glenelg at Unley)Mitch started up forward this week and was rewarded with a couple of goals. He moved between there and the back line but looked a bit more comfortable down back. His understanding of the forward line needs a little bit of work. Sturt are very Chambers conscious and there was times when he was free and could have been used but they went to Chambers instead. He needs to demand the ball more and have a bit more of an impact. Having said that, we see him playing down back more in the future. He had 17 possessions and two goals, so a reasonable game for him.

Nathan Lonie (for North v Central District at Elizabeth)Nathan ran hard all day, but probably doesn’t get used by his teammates as much as he would get used at AFL level. A reasonable game all up for him.

Damon White (for North v Central District at Elizabeth) Presented hard all day, took 8 marks and ran the game out well considering he went into the match with a corky from the week before. Looked dangerous and kicked 2.2 in a good performance.

Marlon Motlop (for North reserves v Central District reserves at Elizabeth) Played at half back and is looking more and more exciting when he gets the ball. Marlon had 4 or 5 bounces and defensively he was a lot better against his opponent.

Gavin Grose (for North reserves v Central District reserves at Elizabeth) Gavin played at centre half-back and full-back and had another impressive game. We’re hoping he’ll play league for North this week as a defender after having a good three weeks of footy.

Ryan Williams (for Central District reserves v North reserves at Elizabeth) Played half back and on the ball. He had 17 touches but one of the most impressive aspects of his game was his chasing and tackling.

Daniel Boyle (for Central Disctrict reserves v North reserves at Elizabeth) His best game for a while. His positioning in the back-line was excellent and didn’t get beaten by his opponent at any stage. He looks very exciting when he has the ball. He had the play of the week when he took the ball at half back and ran, bounced and finished with a goal.

Jonathan Giles (for Central District reserves v North Reserves at Elizabeth)23 hitouts. He’s had better games but he’s working hard at improving some areas of his game and we think a strong performance is just around the corner.
