PORT Adelaide forward Jay Schulz says forgotten veteran Chad Cornes is the obvious replacement for injured goalkicker Justin Westhoff this week.

On Tuesday, it was revealed Westhoff would miss a fortnight with a toe injury, sustained in the Power's last win against Richmond in Darwin in round 10.

Injury Toll Mounts

Cornes has been a casualty of the club's rebuilding approach under new coach Matthew Primus, having made only five appearances this season.

The 31-year-old hasn't played since Schulz returned from a knee injury in round seven and it's been mooted he'll retire and receive a farewell game, likely to be against Collingwood at AAMI Stadium in round 20.

However, Cornes travelled to Brisbane as an emergency last week and Schulz said the premiership player and dual All-Australian was worthy of a recall to the team to take on St Kilda at home on Sunday.

"Matty said at the start of the year Chad was one of the three tall forward players that would play, and when I went down injured he came in," Schulz said on Wednesday.

"His attitude around the club and form in the SANFL has been fantastic. It's been a tough year for him, but he's been tremendous and he's probably the obvious choice."

Schulz played a lone hand in the forward line against the Brisbane Lions last weekend, kicking a career-best return of 7.3.

The ex-Richmond forward also kicked seven goals in the Power's clash with North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium in round 13 last season.

Ironically, Port Adelaide lost both games.

Schulz previous best haul of six goals for the Tigers against the Lions at the Gabba in round 14, 2004 also came in a losing team.

The former Woodville-West Torrens junior did receive a reward for his standout performance against the Lions, though, signing a contract extension with the Power.

Schulz Commits to Power

The club has a policy not to reveal the length of player contracts, but Schulz said he was pleased to be staying at Alberton for "a few more" years.

"I'm not going to come in after kicking seven goals and say, 'right, let's do a deal now', maybe, I should have," he said.

"No, we've been in talks since the start of the year."

Schulz has been a handy acquisition for Port Adelaide since being traded by Richmond at the end of 2009.

The 26-year-old kicked 33 goals in 16 games last season to top the Power's goalkicking, and has already booted 22 goals in nine appearances this year.

The former first-round draft-pick struggled to cement a position in seven years at Richmond, and said his move to Alberton had been "fantastic" for his career.

"When I was at Richmond, [coach] Damien Hardwick said to me, 'you may need a change. I needed a change in my career'," Schulz said.

"It's hard to pinpoint one thing as the reason [for my improvement at Port Adelaide]. I've learned things here I didn't know before and things that have helped me tremendously with my football and my personal life as well.

"I'll be forever thankful for Choco [Mark Williams], firstly, for getting me here and all the coaches I've had here as well."

"Crippa [assistant coach Jason Cripps] taught me so much in the first six months of being here that I sit back now and think, how did I not know those things about the way you move on the field and read the game.

"I'm probably not so hard on myself too and am not riding my lows too low, and my highs too high … and I'm confident in my ability to play AFL, which is a big step."

Port Adelaide is hopeful Schulz will be the first in a long line of players to re-commit to the club this year.

Westhoff has declared he'll remain at Alberton next season, but key defenders Alipate Carlile and Jackson Trengove are yet to re-sign and are believed to have attracted interested from Greater Western Sydney and Richmond, respectively.

Schulz was optimistic the promising duo would stick with the club.

"All of the players are confident in what we’re doing this year and the path we've chosen to go down," he said.

"I know they [Carlile and Trengove] are all on the same page as all the other players are and, hopefully, they'll stay. I'm sure they will and we'll continue on."
