PORT ADELAIDE has added experienced defender Tyson Goldsack to its rookie list after claiming the former Collingwood backman with pick 16 at Thursday’s 2020 AFL Rookie Draft.

Goldsack was to have been Port Adelaide’s SANFL leadership player in 2020 but never represented the club as it was unable to participate in the competition due to the AFL’s COVID-19 restrictions.

The 33-year-old has played 165 AFL games including being part of the Collingwood side which won the 2010 premiership.

Originally drafted with pick 63 in the 2006 AFL National Draft, he retired at the end of 2019 and spent 2020 working as a development coach with Port Adelaide.

His ability to work with the club’s younger players and be an on-field coach will be highly valued.

Port Adelaide’s National Recruiting Manager – Geoff Parker on Goldsack:

“Tyson is a mature player we were considering for a while. We’ve brought in quite a few young players over the last two or three years and to help fast-track their development, it’s not just the work the coaches do Monday to Friday with them, it’s also what happens out on the park on a Saturday in the SANFL.

“We think we’ll be pretty young in the SANFL this year and a mature player like Tyson will help those guys with on-field leadership and development.

“He’s a high character person and a very good player. He’s highly respected at the club.”
