PORT ADELAIDE will wear its Nathan Krakouer-designed AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Roundguernsey again this Thursday night against Hawthorn.
It will form part of Port Adelaide's own annual celebration of National Reconciliation Week (which runs from 27 March to June 3) in lieu of hosting a game in AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round.
The game is a tradition for Port Adelaide, where it gives students participating in its Aboriginal Power Cup program centre stage in curtain-raiser grand finals before the main AFL game at the ground.
It will be the first time Port Adelaide has worn its Aboriginal cultural guernsey at Adelaide Oval, and just the fifth occasion the club has not worn its black ‘V’ guernsey at home, since adopting it permanently in 2010.
Port has twice worn its 'prison bar' jumper at home (in 2013 and 2014), a replica of its 2004 premiership jumper in 2014, and a replica of its first AFL jumper in 2016.
About the design
The design by Nathan Krakouer was first worn in last Thursday’s game against Geelong and tells a story of the journey of Port’s nine Aboriginal players to the club. ‘1967’ features across the chest in recognition of 50 years since the historic referendum that recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as part of the Australian population.
The Aboriginal flag also features on one of two boomerangs on the chest.
Animal tracks represent cultural totems of the players.
