THE FIRST deal of trade week finally has occurred, with Richmond sending its third round pick in the NAB AFL Draft – No. 42 overall – to Port Adelaide for Adam Thomson.

The 22-year-old played 28 games for the Power in the four years since being taken at No. 11 by the South Australian club.

Port Adelaide is happy with the trade, with football operations manager Peter Rohde saying both sides benefitted from the deal.

“Adam made it clear to us that he intended to take the opportunity to play at another club next year so we consider a third-round pick as fair compensation,” Rohde said.

“In what is considered a critical draft for all 16 clubs, and one deep in talent, we are confident we will be able to use the third round selection at the draft to bring another quality young player to the Power.

“We understand Adam’s decision to seek further opportunities. He has been respected member of our playing group over the past four years and we wish him well for the future.”

Richmond coach Terry Wallace said Thomson would add to the Tigers' ball-winning ability, with the club ranked second in the AFL in contested possessions in 2008.

"Adam clearly fits the age criteria that we are developing and he will be a strong addition to our midfield," he said.

"I believe Richmond supporters will enjoy watching Adam play, as he is a tough player who wins his own ball."

General manager of football Craig Cameron said the club was happy to have snared itself an inside midfielder.

"We are impressed with what we have seen of Adam and believe his skills and attributes will be a good fit at Richmond," he said.

"It is worth noting that Adam has averaged 14.7 disposals this year despite only 60 per cent game time."
