PORT ADELAIDE has farewelled Paddy Ryder and Dougal Howard after completing a trade that sees the club secure an extra first-round draft pick.
Ryder and Howard have been traded to St Kilda in a deal that sees the Power receive picks 12 and 18 at November’s NAB AFL Draft along with the Saints’ future third round selection.
Port Adelaide will also send pick 10 and a future fourth-round selection to Moorabbin.
Ryder, 31, arrived at Alberton from Essendon in the trade period at the end of 2014.
He played 17 AFL games and booted 15 goals in 2019, seeing him leave the club after 73 games in the black, white, silver and teal.
Port Adelaide General Manager – Football, Chris Davies acknowledged the 243-game veteran’s service to the club.
“Paddy has been a wonderful servant of the club - a best and fairest winner, a role model for younger players and a great friend to many in the Port Adelaide family,” he said.
“He expressed a desire to continue his career at St Kilda and we are pleased to be able to negotiate a trade that will allow him to do so.”
Howard, 23, has played 45 AFL games since being drafted with pick 56 in the 2014 National Draft.
The Murray Bushrangers product showed versatility in being deployed both in defence and in the forward line during his time at Alberton.
The trade continues the club’s strategy since the end of 2018 to add young, high end talent to its list through the draft.
“Dougal has been a solid contributor to our group and has developed significantly since arriving five years ago at pick 56,” Davies said.
“The decision to allow him to depart was a difficult one as Dougal has been a popular member of our squad.
“However, this deal clearly meets the threshold of what we considered to be fair in the circumstances including an improvement in our draft position.
“We wish both Paddy and Dougal all the best for the future.”
The trade means Port Adelaide currently has picks 12, 18, 29, 65, 66, 67 and 70 at the NAB AFL Draft on Wednesday 27 November.
